Swiatek or Badosa likely World Number One in waiting after Miami due to Barty retirement

With Ashleigh Barty deciding to retire from the sport at the top of the WTA Rankings, the new World Number One in waiting will likely be former French Open champion and recent Indian Wells winner, Iga Swiatek.

Swiatek reached World Number Two with Maria Sakkari moving into World Number Three after reaching the final.

But the race for World Number One will be between Swiatek and Paula Badosa as opposed to the Greek who defends a Miami semi-final this time around from last year. It will likely be the 20-year-old though as she holds a big lead currently.

But Barbora Krejcikova, Anett Kontaveit, Karolina Pliskova, Aryna Sabalenka and Sakkari all have their own chances in the coming months.

All of this hinges on Ashleigh Barty asking to be removed from the rankings though like Justine Henin did back in 2008 when she retired but it is likely a new World Number One is imminent without Swiatek having to accrue the points to overtake Barty.
