Poland’s
Iga Swiatek is set to enter another week as the
women’s world number one player.
The 22-year-old faced an exit from
Wimbledon 2023 in the
quarterfinals after losing to Ukraine’s Elina Svitolina with a score of 7-5,
6-7, 6-2.
Many feared that her reign as the top women’s player will
come to an end after that result, especially with her closer rivals still
competing in the tournament.
However, the world number two Aryna Sabalenka, who just
needed to qualify for the final of the third Grand Slam of the year to become
the world number one, ended up losing the semifinal against Tunisia’s Ons Jabeur.
That result helped Swiatek in continuing her reign as the
number one women’s player in the world for the 10th consecutive
week.
The Warsaw-born will return to action next week in her hometown where she will have an opportunity to tighten the grip on the top
spot.
Her closest rival Sabalenka will be in action in the Canadian
Open next month which means that she might have even more ground to cover when
she will resume on-court action.
Despite the quarterfinal exit, it was still Swiatek’s best
outing in Wimbledon and she will be hoping to improve it further next year.
