Iga Swiatek did the unthinkable early on Sunday by defeating the in-form Halep in stellar fashion to reach her first Roland Garros quarterfinal.
The 19-year old Swiatek defeated Simona Halep in straight sets at the Roland Garros on Sunday reaching her first-ever grand slam quarterfinal. She enjoys playing in Paris showcased by her previous best ever result at grand slam which was the 4th round last year. This year she went even further and she did it with style. Right from the get-go she imposed herself and her own playstyle never allowing Halep to take over. One by one, the games started piling for Swiatek who quickly found herself clinching the opening set with 6-1. The 24-minute effort was highlighted by a stunning number of winners (17) highlighting her aggressive playstyle.
She started off the 2nd set with yet another break taking an early 2-0 lead. Halep found a bit of confidence winning her next service game but it didn't matter much as Swiatek once again broke her the next time she served. Halep never recovered after that and she lost the 2nd set 6-2. Swiatek wasn't as aggressive as in the first one hitting only 11 winners en route to the victory.
It was a stunning display from Swiatek who served Simona some of her own medicine. She attacked her serve relentlessly threatening to break her serve every time she served. All in all the effort lasted a little over an hour and Swiatek won it 6-1 6-2.
