Lesia Tsurenko and
Iga Swiatek had a really nice embrace at the net at the
Rome Open with the Polish player later revealing that Tsurenko thanked her for speaking up for Ukraine.
Swiatek has been very outspoken about the war in Ukraine since it started opting to wear a small pin on her hat with its flag as well as organising a fundraiser for the country. She explained her decision by stating that Poland and Ukraine shared a rather large border and that the countries are pretty close to each other which makes it a bit personal for her.
After the embrace with Tsurenko, Swiatek revealed in the post-match conference what it was about:
“She thanked me for supporting Ukraine, but she did it also before in
Miami. It’s really nice and I really appreciate that."
She added;
“Well, I think there’s nothing to kind of thank for because for me
it’s pretty obvious that we should support Ukraine. Yeah, I will do that
until the war is going to end. But I know that they are in a tough situation, so I have a lot of empathy to all the Ukrainian players.”
