Taylor Townsend was called out for allegedly cheating during her opening round clash at the 2024
Miami Open with
Lucia Bronzetti taking to social media to vent after the video emerged of a chair umpire oversight.
Townsend eventually won 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 in a three set battle. A point during a rally in the deciding set saw Bronzetti left fuming. Townsend was up 5-4 and serving at 30-0. After a back and forth, Bronzetti hit a lob towards Townsend forcing her towards the baseline. Townsend took her time to assess the ball that landed outside the line and she earned a triple break point.
Sharing the clip on social media, she pointed out that Townsend had touched the ball before it landed and should have been called by the chair umpire or even Townsend with the point conceded due to sportsmanship.
"Don't know which is worse... the chair umpire or the player who denied it," wrote Bronzetti on Instagram.
