British pundit Greg Rusedski was as confused as everyone one else following an unusual event after the final of the women's doubles event at the 2023 Madrid Open, with fans and viewers left scratching their heads at the match's conclusion.
The unlikely pairing of Victoria Azarenka and Beatriz Haddad Maia upset top seeds Jessica Pegula and Coco Gauff to lift the title, handing the duo their first trophy together. However, to everyone's surprise, there were no victory speeches by either the winners or losers during the trophy presentation.
"I've never seen that in a finals in doubles where neither team has spoken," said Rusedski to colleague Catherine Whitaker during the live broadcast. "That is the most bizarre situation. I can't remember this happening,"
The former World No.4 was even more flabbergasted as both the winners and losers left the court after the presentation, as he believed they would be joining him for an interview on Prime.
"I don't want to do an impersonation but where is the person from the WTA that interviews them after the match?" added Rusedski. "That's usually the normal procedure here so something has obviously gone awry, this doesn't make any sense."
