Martina Trevisan has spoken about her late ascent to the top level of the WTA tour.
Italian player mentioned earlier has shown that her favorite surface is clay, and she just achieved a victory over Eugenie Bouchard in the Madrid Open, reaching the tournament's round of 16 and will face Jessica Pegula.
The 29-year-old tennis player had a significant rise in the rankings last year during the clay court season, where she won her first WTA 250 title and surprised everyone by reaching the semifinals of the 2022 French Open.
"I stopped playing tennis for five seasons, from 16 to 20. That's the main reason I came in a bit later than the others. During that stage I didn't compete, until I decided to come back and start from scratch. I perfectly remember the sensations I had when I played a game again almost five years later,” she said.
“I felt happy, I really enjoyed it. Since then, all I've tried is to be better than the day before,” added.
Martina Trevisan has shown pride in her best year on the tour in 2022, where she climbed from world No. 85 to world No. 27 in just three weeks.
“I did very well in 2022, I have fantastic memories of my stay in Paris, my first semifinal in a Grand Slam tournament. Now I have to focus only on this tournament. Then I will be able to think about Rome and then I will arrive in Paris, where I hope to arrive in my best shape.”
“Normally I don't pay much attention to the rankings, neither when things are going well, nor when things are more negative. Of course, I'm very satisfied with my entire journey, for all the commitment I've given over the years.
I'm just trying to get through. Pressure is good for an athlete, it means you've done well in the past. Otherwise you wouldn't hear any of it. My thinking is that I can always do better," finished Trevisan.
