Coco Gauff said that her "dream" is to win the
WTA Finals in the future, but also revealed the one victory that she would choose over it.
The World No. 3 had a hugely successful season, the highlight of which was winning her first Grand Slam title at the US Open. As a result, Gauff qualified comfortably for the 2023 WTA Finals in Cancun. This was her second appearance at the prestigious season-ending championship after she was eliminated in the Group Stage during the 2022 edition.
This year, the 19-year-old won two out of three matches in the round-robin stage and thus progressed to the semi-final, where she was defeated by her friend and doubles partner Jessica Pegula.
Gauff calls WTA Finals the "most challenging" tournament
After her campaign in Cancun was over, Gauff looked toward the future and revealed her goal of winning the WTA Finals one day.
"It would be cool to win it. To be honest, as a kid, I always dreamt of winning Grand Slams. I think as I’ve grown as a pro on tour, I learned more about what the WTA Finals is about. I’d definitely say that would be a goal of mine now, after competing in it for 2 years and realizing this is the best of the best. I do think I can improve. It would definitely be a dream," she said.
However, the American player also added that if she had to choose, she would still prefer to win another Grand Slam title. Nevertheless, Gauff explained why she thought the Finals were among the "most challenging" tournaments on the WTA Tour.
"If I had to choose, I’d rather win another Slam. But it’s definitely a dream. I think this tournament is one of the most challenging. Not only because it’s the Top 8, but because it’s the end of the season," she continued.
