There are a lot of accolades associated with Serena Williams, as her illustrious tennis career has spanned over four decades. The American is looking to capture her 24th Grand Slam singles title at the 2021 Australian Open, a feat she has been pursuing for quite some time.
However, Williams had a mere 18 Major titles at the start of the 2015 season. The then-World No.1 was the top-seed at the Australian Open, and was hoping to claim her sixth title in Melbourne.
After powering her way to the final, Williams faced longtime foe Maria Sharapova. The Russian was the second seed, and had been in spectacular form throughout the tournament. However, Williams had defeated Sharapova in 15 consecutive matches and she would not be deterred.
After a relatively easy first set for the American, Sharapova displayed more heart and aggression as the set proceeded to a tiebreak. The Russian was able to save two championship points, but could not stop the relentless attack from the World No.1. Williams triumphed 6-3 7-6(5) to win her sixth Australian Open title, as well as her 19th career singles Grand Slam trophy. Furthermore, she cemented her place in history as the only player to win all four singles Grand Slam titles at least once after turning 30 years of age.
