Naomi Osaka got beaten by Teichmann in the 3rd round of the Western & Southern Open 6-3 3-6 3-6.
It was a shocking defeat for Osaka who did not play her best at this event but looked better than usual. Osaka looked comfortable in this match taking the first set with some solid tennis overall. Teichmann came back in the 2nd to force the decider however Osaka still had a 2-0 lead in the final set. The Swiss won 4 games in a row to turn the match upside down and finished it off with 6-3.
After the match Osaka said:
"I thought she played really well. I thought in the first set I was doing everything I was supposed to do, and then in the second set I feel like, and also in the third set I felt like I was a bit too defensive maybe."
The 2nd set swung the momentum heavily in the match as Teichmann explained after the match that she got a lot of confidence from it. Despite going down 0-2 in the final set Teichmann never lost belief. Osaka summarised her thoughts by saying she learned a lot:
"I felt like I learned a lot from this match today, and I felt that, if anything to take away from this, I tried my best throughout the entire match, so I can sleep at night."
The Japanese player will turn her attention to the US Open now where she is the defending champion.
