It has been a rough couple of months for Simona Halep who missed the majority of the clay season as well as the grass season due to a lower leg injury. Halep was not able to compete at the French Open and could not defend her title at Wimbledon because of it.
Prior to taking a flight to Canada Halep said:
“Anything is possible with such an injury. I had never been through something like this, a torn muscle. The doctors told me that I have recovered; I feel recovered, but in an official match it is different. So I will see when I get there [in Montreal]."
Halep had hoped she would recover in time for Wimbledon and even entered several events ahead of it but each time she was forced to pull out days ahead of her matches. She described it:
“It was the hardest time of my career because it was a pretty serious injury, I had never met anything like that, but I took the positive side and I was glad to stay home.”
However Halep is feeeling much better now:
“I’m much better now, I’ve rested mentally. But I’m also physically well; I didn’t have any pain while I trained. Now I hope to be able to play the tournaments. I intend to be healthy and play as many matches as possible."
