Venus Williams and Alexandra Eala reunite after DC Open twist for Canadian Open doubles

Venus Williams and Alexandra Eala will reunite in Toronto, giving fans another chance to watch one of the most unexpected doubles partnerships of the season after their first collaboration was interrupted by a change of plans in Washington.
The seven-time Grand Slam champion and the newly crowned WTA champion from the Philippines received the final doubles wild card for the Canadian Open and will step onto Centre Court together during Thursday’s night session, renewing a partnership that quickly caught attention during the grass-court season.
Williams and Eala first teamed up at the Bad Homburg Open, where they reached the quarterfinals in their first tournament together. Their first partnership already showed promising signs. The pair were initially expected to reunite at the DC Open, but Eala decided to focus on singles after Wimbledon — a decision that paid off as she captured her maiden WTA title in Washington.
Now back together in Toronto, Williams believes their first experience together showed the potential of the partnership and hopes they can continue building on that foundation.
“We had a great start,” Williams said in her press conference ahead of Toronto. “We played really well. Hoping to get a chance to play with her again. I think as a team, like, if we had a chance to play often, then I think we could play really well.”
Eala previously explained that her decision to prioritize singles in Washington was based on respect for Williams and the standards required to compete alongside her. “I have so much respect for Venus,” Eala said. “I am so grateful for every opportunity that I have to be around her, to learn from her, to hit with her.”
The timing of their reunion could hardly be more interesting. Williams continues her return to competition at 46 years old, while Eala arrives in Toronto as one of the fastest-rising names on the WTA Tour after her breakthrough season, which included a fourth-round run at Wimbledon and a victory over former world No. 1 Iga Swiatek.
The pair will face Liudmila Samsonova and Miyu Kato in the first round, adding another chapter to a partnership that already has a unique storyline: a legend still chasing special moments and a young star learning from one of the greatest players in tennis history.
