A battle of two former World No.1 players and Grand Slam champions now in the twilight of their careers took precedent on Tuesday night as Venus Williams took on Victoria Azarenka.
Williams eased through 6-3, 6-2 to set up a 31st career meeting against her sister Serena in the next round.
She extended her lead in their head-to-head against Azarenka to 6-2 in the process. Williams only faced one break point all day showing her dominance at times. The American was also perfect when she held break points, converting all three she grasped in the match.
After first round exits at the Australian Open, Acapulco, and Monterrey, Williams showed her pedigree against Azarenka during that victory.
As did
Leylah Fernandez who eased past Sloane Stephens in a 6-3, 6-3 win. This was a second win this year for the 17-year-old against the former US Open champion and while she produced a sharp display, Stephens could only produce patches of brilliance and concerns have to be there ahead of the US Open as a result.
