Former World No.1
Venus Williams has been granted a wildcard entry to the National Bank Open (Rogers Cup) in Toronto this summer.
The seven-time Grand Slam singles champion will be competing at the event for the 11th time, with her best result being a 2014 runner-up finish at the National Bank Open's sister iteration in Montreal.
This will be Williams' first singles match in almost 12 months, with her most recent WTA singles outing being at the Chicago Women's Open last August.
Her last singles victory came against Mihaela Buzarnescu at Wimbledon 2021. Williams, 42, returned to action in mixed doubles at Wimbledon this month, partnering Jamie Murray to reach the second round.
Venus will join her sister,
Serena Williams, who entered using her protected ranking. The National Bank Open will run from August 8-14, 2022, and is one of the bigger tournaments used to warm-up for the
US Open.
