Simona Halep made her comeback to tennis at the National Bank Open in Montreal and lost to Danielle Collins in three sets.
Entering this event Halep did not play competitive tennis for nearly 3 months which means her expectations were low. The Romanian player spoke at a press conference ahead of the match saying she is not expecting anything of this event other than to play some competitive tennis.
She got more than she wanted in her thriller match vs Collins who won back to back titles in the previous two events. Halep was very good from the start and won the first set with 6-2 before losing the next two with 6-4 6-4. After the match Halep was very positive about her level displayed saying:
“Very positive about how I played today. A little bit unexpected because after three months that you cannot play much tennis, you come and play three hours at a very high level with someone that is winning lately matches and tournaments. So I’m really happy with the way I played.”
And indeed there was much to be seen from Halep who nearly won this match against an in-form player. The Romanian player looked very good and should be even better after getting several matches under her belt.
Her next opportunity will be at the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati next week. After the matche with Collins the Montreal crowd gave Halep a standing ovation which you can see below.
