Petra Kvitova played the final
Wimbledon match of her career on Tuesday at the All England Lawn & Tennis Club after falling to Emma Navarro.
Kvitova played her final match at Wimbledon losing 6-3, 6-1 in perhaps the biggest gauge as to why she was saying goodbye at this point. She had an emotional farewell as it went from Navarro to winning to a goodbye to one of the best champions of this era.
The former World No.2 announced earlier this month that she'll retire from tennis after the US Open. She had a brief return to the tour this year after the 2024 birth of her son Petr. She sealed a wildcard for her 16th and final Wimbledon this year and led Navarro early on 3-1 but lost 11 out of the last 12 games.
Navarro sat there watching on as Kvitova had her moment. She said that while she wished she could've played a little bit longer in the tie that she enjoyed her final stand.
She won the title in 2011 and 2014 and got a show court as a result of her excellence over the years but Navarro was too good in the end as she left the court to adulation from the crowd.
A crowd that has seen her achieve so much in her incredible career that ends in just two months time at Flushing Meadows.
"To have another chance to player here one more time, it means a lot to me," Kvitova said. "This place holds the best memories I could wish for. I never dreamed of winning a Wimbledon, and I won it twice, so this is something very, very special.
"I will miss Wimbledon for sure. I will miss tennis, I will miss the fans, but I'm ready for the next chapter in life as well."
