Coco Gauff will make history once again as the Team USA Olympic Games flagbearer, she joins basketball superstar LeBron James who will be the male flagbearer for the tournament which starts on Saturday.
Gauff will not only get this honour for the first time but in fact it will be her first ever Olympic Games. She was set to compete at Tokyo back in 2021 but she had to withdraw due to COVID-19 with the pandemic running rife back then.
But this time there are no such worries as Gauff will play including alongside Jessica Pegula in the USA Women's Tennis team. One of the strongest teams on paper, it also features Danielle Collins and Emma Navarro.
Serena Williams was the last American to win Olympic gold in the women's singles at London 2012, a feat that Gauff alongside Pegula and others will look to emulate over the next week. Gauff's moment to shine will come during Friday night's ceremony.
It will be held on the River Seine and will be the first opening ceremony in summer Olympic history to be held outside of the Olympic stadium. Gauff and others though won't find out their fate in terms of the draw on Thursday.
"I never thought in a million years I would have the honour of carrying the American flag for Team USA in the opening ceremony," Gauff said.
"I could not be more proud to lead my team-mates with LeBron as we showcase our dedication and passion on the biggest stage there is."
She also was shown being told about the moment by her close friend Christopher Eubanks in which she also received the white jacket she would be wearing. Danielle Collins was seen reacting in the background bigging up her teammate as Gauff was seen getting emotional on finding out the news.
