Spain’s tennis star
Paula Badosa has opened up about the
frustration she had while recovering from a back injury. The
26-year-old was once regarded as one of the best players currently playing in
women’s tennis.
Badosa had a turbulent 18 months. She suffered a serious back injury that kept her out of action for nearly 12 months. The former world number two was recently quoted in a report in which she explained how frustrating it was to recover from a back injury when she could not do anything. Badosa also revealed that she intends to keep on playing for as long as possible if her back stays in good shape.
"When I'm well, I want to be as high as possible again,”
she said. “Of course, I'm not happy where I am now. I'm not going to fool
myself. I do know where I come from and everything I'm going through. In a
crude way, I've had a broken back. The process was delicate and there were
weeks when I couldn't do anything. So as long as the injury allows me, because
it's chronic, I intend to keep playing as many years as I can."
Badosa returned to the court earlier this year but has
failed to produce consistent results. In the first Grand Slam of the year — the
Australian Open — the Manhattan-born star was knocked out after losing in the
third round to Amanda Anisimova in straight sets with a score of 7-5, 6-4. Later
in the French Open, Badosa’s journey ended in the third round once again
as she lost to the former world number one Belarus’ Aryna Sabalenka in straight
sets with a score of 7-5, 6-1. Badosa’s most recent appearance was at Wimbledon, where she lost in the fourth round to Croatia’s Donna Vekic with a score of
6-2, 1-6, 6-4.
