Coco Gauff got into a heated argument with the chair umpire during his semi-final match with
Iga Swiatek at the 2024
French Open which left her in tears. The argument happened due unsurpisingly to a dodgy call from the chair umpire.
Gauff believed this was disruptive to her play. The opening set went Swiatek's way with the World No.1 taking the set 6-2 with breaks of serve. In the second set, Gauff led 2-1. Swiatek served to stay with the American with this being a pivotal juncture in her winning.
A serve from Swiatek at 2-1 was called out by the linesperson which was overturned by the chair umpire. Gauff's return had hit the net which lead to the point being given to Swiatek. Gauff certainly didn't think so. She felt it should've been called before she swung her racquet.
This would've meant the point should've been replayed. She walked over to the chair umpire but her protestation was in vain. At this point, the fans started booing loudly with Gauff pointing this out to the chair umpire to tell her she is wrong. She started to flood with tears amid this issue as she walked back dejected.
The cameras caught this reaction with the surprise taking many fans on social media by surprise and as Stephanie Myles wrote, she said it spoke for the state of mind of. Gauff at that point. That also proved to be the straw that broke the camels back for Gauff who went on to be defeated with this being a defining moment.
"Are you serious? They are booing you because you are wrong... This is the second time this has happened. It’s a Grand Slam Semifinal. Know the rules of the game," Gauff said. Now Swiatek will face off against either Jasmine Paolini or Mirra Andreeva in the final. Whilst Gauff will be thinking what might've been.
