Iga Swiatek improves to 11-1 vs. Coco Gauff, beating the American 6-2, 6-4 to reach a 4th #RolandGarros final in the last 5 years. 🔥 5th slam final, she won them all so far.
The first half of the 2024 French Open final is confirmed with Iga Swiatek now sat at 11-1 over Coco Gauff in their Head to Head in reaching the championship match at Roland Garros.
A match up that suits Swiatek down to the ground and Gauff could not spring a surprise today. She lost out 6-2, 6-4 to the World No.1 who will play on Saturday in the final and will aim to join the annuls of history as a four-time French Open champion.
She will be the overwhelming favourite to do so with her moniker as the Queen of the Clay as she took down Gauff in just over an hour and a half. Next up is the winner of Mirra Andreeva and Jasmine Paolini in the clash between two of the unheralded names. This the case due to Rybakina and Sabalenka being touted as the nearest threat and one of the two being seen as most likely to face Swiatek in the final.
But no matter who it is, they are bound to face an uphill task. Gauff lost her serve straight away in the contest albeit she had the chance to get it straight back. But after holding finally, Swiatek broke again to make it 4-1 and exert dominance early on as Gauff had no answers as usual against the Pole. She went 5-1 up not giving Gauff a chance and took the opening set 6-2.
The second was a bit more of a drawn out affair. Gauff herself went 3-1 up and would've dared to dream of forcing a deciding set. But Swiatek upped the tempo and snatched any hope away. She broke back and then broke again to lead 4-3. She was suddenly 5-3 up on Gauff who would've been lamenting her luck. Albeit her luck nearly returned. Uncharacteristically, Swiatek spurned a multitude of match point chances as Gauff saved her skin to make it 5-4. But finally in the next game, Swiatek served it out.
