Coco Gauff was left fuming at the umpire during her third-round tie at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships as she called for the supervisor, but was denied her request.
Line calling has been an issue for sometime now with the electronic system (albeit with Jelena Ostapenko in particular not a fan) being introduced by 2025. But before that happens, it is still very much human line judges and traditional hawk-eye meaning there is still margin for error.
Gauff saw off Karolina Pliskova in the third round and used a mid match wobble with the umpire as fuel. After hitting a serve on the line, Pliskova returned the ball but it didn't land in the court meaning the American should've won the point. The umpire though overturned it calling it out. Gauff challenged his call which showed that the ball was in. She still was fuming at this as the umpire ordered them to replay the point.
Gauff started a lengthy discussion with the umpire demanding the supervisor, but the umpire refused over and over again which created tension. A five minute discussion only did to serve as motivation for Gauff and also put light on the traditional system.
