Romania’s
Simona Halep has added fuel to the rumours of her
potential return to the
US Open.
The former world number has been on the sidelines after her
dope test came back positive for Roxadustat last year.
Since then, the trial is underway and no decision has been
out yet but that has barred Halep to take part in any professional tennis competition.
Last week, surprisingly, the Constanta-born appeared in the
provisional list of players who are set to take part in the competition,
largely because of a WTA rule which allows players to take part in the
competition if they are under trial and a suspension order has not been
announced.
To add fuel to the rumours of her potential return, Halep
has posted a video on her official Instagram account where she can be seen
training.
The recent developments will excite the fans of the
31-year-old who would be eager to see her return to action in the near future.
Halep has an impressive record while playing at the Grand
Slams as she has won it twice — the first time in the French Open in 2018 where she
defeated America’s Sloane Stephens in the final with a score of 3–6, 6–4, 6–1 and then in
2019 where she got the better of America’s Serena Williams in straight sets with
a score of 6-2, 6-2 to lift the Wimbledon title.
Other than that, Halep also qualified for the final of the
Australian Open in 2018 — where she lost to Denmark's Caroline Wozniacki with a score of 7–6(7–2),
3–6, 6–4 — and also lost the semifinal of the US Open to Italy’s Flavia
Pennetta with a score of 6-1, 6-3 in 2015.
