Despite the seriousness of the situation, there was a moment of levity before the 2023
Zhengzhou Open final between
Zheng Qinwen and
Barbora Krejcikova.
The coin toss often occurs right before the match, when both players are standing on opposite sides of the night. However, the exercise appeared to be a bit more complicated on this occasion.
Neither player seemed eager to pick a side
Krejcikova, the 2023 French Open champion, opted to allow Zheng to pick a side of the coin during the toss. However, Zheng refused, stating she was fine with her Czech opponent choosing a side.
This led to chair umpire Marija Cicak interjecting, as she jokingly pointed out that one of them had to choose. Krejcikova finally made the pick, with Zheng winning the toss and electing to serve. The 21-year old Chinese star would go on to defeat Krejcikova 2-6 6-2 6-4 to win her first WTA 500 title and third career WTA singles title.
