Poland’s
Iga Swiatek has already achieved a lot in her young
career. Things have just gotten better for the 22-year-old as she won the
Madrid Open on Saturday after beating the current world number two, Aryna Sabalenka, with a score of 7-5, 4-6, 7-6.
After the win, Swiatek received the trophy from one of her
favourite players,
Garbine Muguruza. The current world number one praised the 30-year-old when she recently announced her retirement from the sport.
"When I was younger, I was looking at her achievements
when she won Roland Garros and Wimbledon," said Swiatek. "I was kind
of thinking maybe she’s going to be my favorite WTA player, because I always
liked Rafa [Nadal], but I never really had anybody on WTA to follow. Garbiñe
was actually one of them for a while. And then I kind of started playing on
tour, so it was pretty weird to be fangirling about anybody. She’s a great player, a nice person."
With that win, Swiatek has managed to continue her brilliant
performances this season. Before her triumph in Madrid, the four-time Grand
Slam winner also won the Indian Wells after beating Greece’s Maria Sakkari in
the final and the Qatar Open, where she got the better of Elena Rybakina in the final in straight sets with a score of 7-6, 6-2. Other than that, Swiatek also lost in the semi-finals of the Dubai Open and the Stuttgart Open.
