Daria Kasatkina was left fuming as a hawk-eye error once again reared its head at a pivotal juncture in her third-round defeat to Sorana Cirstea at the 2024 Miami Open.
Kasatkina who benefited from a bye and then a retirement as Claire Liu had enough in the second round midway through faced Cirstea who then was defeated by Danielle Collins last night. The Romanian won in straight sets 7-5, 6-2, but the first set could've been a lot different.
An error from the Electronic Line Calling system awarded Cirstea an ace, the serve in fact landed out and the close-call camera showed that it was out as Kasatkina was left dismayed as it wasn't then overturned despite being blatant. Jelena Ostapenko is some what infamous for her dismay surrounding electronic line-calling and a lot of tennis fans used her as an example of this erroneous call.
"And what does the @WTA & @MiamiOpen have to say for themselves? Where is the apology, the statement of action, the reparation/remediation plan? @DKasatkina & the rest of the tour deserve better than simply ignoring a blatant failure of technology.. The chair ump needed to act!" a fan wrote.
"Maybe Ostapenko was right when she said we need line judges back!" another fan noted. "There was one ball from Noskova last night that I could swear was at lests 20-30 cm out. Iga also noticed it and expected it to be called out. It surprised her that it wasn't," a fan also wrote.
