Maria Sakkari
ended up in tears during the award ceremony of the Mubadala Citi DC Open after
her defeat in the final against Coco Gauff.
The Greek
player experienced another disappointment despite an impressive week in
Washington, falling to the young local star Coco Gauff with a score of 2-6,
3-6.
This marks
the sixth consecutive final that Sakkari has lost, a trend that has been
persisting despite her status as a top-10 player for the past two years.
Despite reaching the final stages of tournaments, she has been unable to clinch
a title.
Since 2021,
Sakkari has made it to the semifinals of WTA tournaments 21 times, advancing to
the final on only five occasions and failing to secure a title during that
time. She finds herself second only to world No. 1 Iga Swiatek, who, in the
same period, reached the semifinals 23 times, made it to 17 finals, and won 14
titles.
During the
award ceremony, Sakkari expressed her frustration over the loss and teared up
while expressing gratitude to her close ones.
“It’s
pretty disappointing but at the same time, a month ago, we didn’t think we’d be
here. So thank you. Thanks to Tom & my sister for being here this week.
You’re the core of my team.”
“Thanks for
supporting me, thanks for believing in me and of course thanks to everyone back
home.”
Sakkari has
only one title to her name in her career, which she achieved at Rabat in 2019.
Among the top-25 players, only Karolina Muchova and Qinwen Zheng share the same
number of titles as Sakkari, but both of them are currently ranked outside the
top 15.
This week,
Sakkari will be back in action as she heads into the Canadian Open following
her final appearance, which has propelled her to world No. 8. As the 8th seed
in the tournament, she will receive a bye in the first round and await the
winner of the match between Elna Svitolina and Danielle Collins, who is coming
from the qualifiers.
