The final
of the Mubadala Citi
DC Open between
Maria Sakkari and
Coco Gauff was
interrupted on two occasions due to spectators needing medical attention during
the match.
The highly
anticipated final of the WTA event took place in Washington, with world No. 7
and 8 battling it out for the title. Showing great superiority over her
opponent, young American Coco Gauff clinched the trophy with a convincing score
of 6-2, 6-3, confirming her excellent performance throughout the week.
In the
second set, Maria Sakkari was serving with a score of 2-1, 15-40, trying to
hold on to the break advantage she had.
However,
the match was briefly halted when the chair judge noticed a spectator in
distress due to the intense heat in Washington
During a
critical moment with two break points against her, Maria Sakkari's coach was
seen making gestures from the stands to encourage her. After the match resumed,
the Greek player managed to save the first break point, but on the following point,
Coco Gauff seized the opportunity and secured the break.
The match
ultimately ended with a triumph for the 19-year-old Coco Gauff, who clinched
her fourth career title and her first in the WTA 500 category.
Unfortunately
for Sakkari, this was her sixth consecutive final loss, with only one title to
her name, achieved back in 2019 in Rabat. Since then, she has reached two WTA
1000 finals, four WTA 500 finals, and one WTA 250 final, but has been unable to
clinch victory in those instances.
Both Gauff
and Sakkari will now compete in the
Canadian Open in Montreal, where they are
seeded as the 7th and 8th seeds, respectively. As a result, they receive
exemptions for the first round and advance directly to the round of 32.
Coco Gauff
awaits the winner of the match between the wild card entry Rebecca Marino and
Katie Boulter, who came through the qualifying rounds. On the other hand, Maria
Sakkari faces tough potential opponents, as she awaits the winner of the match
between Danielle Collins and Elina Svitolina.
