Dan Evans
defeats Griekspoor 7-5, 6-3 to clinch his second career title at the Mubadala
Citi
DC Open.
The British
tennis player had a dream week in Washington, securing his first ATP 500 title
and reaching a career-high ranking of world No. 21.
Evans had
not registered victories on hardcourt since the Australian Open in January,
where he defeated Facundo Bagnis and Jeremy Chardy before exiting in the third
round against Andrey Rublev.
His last
ATP-level win came in April in Barcelona against Francisco Cerundolo, and he
had been facing doubts due to injuries in 2023.
As the 9th
seed in Washington, Evans elevated his game with each match, defeating Gregoire
Barrere, Aleksandr Shevchenko, Frances Tiafoe, and Grigor Dimitrov on his way
to the final. Griekspoor, the Dutch player, proved to be no major challenge for
the 33-year-old, who comfortably secured victory in straight sets.
The
Dutchman Griekspoor did not pose a major problem for the 33-year-old tennis
player, who secured victory in two comfortable sets. In the first set, both
players held their serves, and Evans got the crucial break in the 12th game
just when it seemed the set would be decided in a tie-break.
In the
second set, a rain interruption occurred in Washington when the match was tied
at 2-2. After the resumption, Evans struck first, securing a break in the
eighth game, and giving himself the opportunity to close out the match with his
serve at 5-3 in his favor.
Despite
facing four break points in the final game, Evans displayed composure under
pressure and sealed the victory on his first match point, unexpectedly
clinching the title in Washington.
Both
players will now compete in the Canadian Open, set to begin on Tuesday. Evans
will face wild card Gabriel Diallo, while
Tallon Griekspoor is drawn against
the 13th seed, Alexander Zverev.
