Former world number one Angelique Kerber announced her retirement from tennis on Thursday. She posted on her social media platform account that she would be quitting tennis
after the Paris Olympics in 2024.
“Paris 2024 will mark the finish line of the most incredible
journey I could have ever dreamed of growing up with a racket in my hand,” she
said. “There are many more things I want to say and people to thank, which I
will do once I completed my last match...but for now, I will take the time and
soak up every second of this final episode on court. Thank you all for your
support - it means the world to me.”
With the 36-year-old announcing her farewell dates, it is time to cherish some of her best moments on the tennis court. One of those came during the 2019 Hopman Cup final, where she was partnering with Alexander Zverev. The two faced the pair of Switzerland’s legendary tennis star Roger
Federer and Belinda Bencic. In the sixth game of the fourth set, Kerber arguably produced the tournament's shot, which Federer also applauded.
Federer and Bencic eventually won the game with a score of 4-0, 1-4, and 4-3, but that shot will live long in the memory of Kerber
fans as they will cherish her impressive career. The Bremen-born star will finish
her illustrious career after winning three Grand Slams. Her first major title
was the Australian Open in 2016 as she defeated former world number one America’s
Serena Williams in the final with a score of 6–4, 3–6, 6–4.
Later that year, Kerber won the US Open and defeated
Czech Republic’s Karolina Pliskova in the final with a score of 6–3, 4–6, 6–4.
Her last major title came in 2018 when she won Wimbledon after beating Serena in the final in straight sets with a score of 6-3, 6-3.
