Venus Williams shared a behind-the-scenes video of her victory over Camila Giorgi at the Birmingham Classic.
The former world No. 1 is making her comeback to the WTA tour during the grass season after being sidelined by injuries. Last week, she achieved her first victory in two years by defeating Italian player Camila Giorgi in the first round of the Birmingham Classic.
Venus Williams shared a video on her YouTube channel showcasing the behind-the-scenes moments before and after the match, providing insight into her daily work and introducing the members of her team.
“I gotta focus on playing in a few days so I got use to the new conditions… here we go,” she said at the beginning of the video.
In the initial sequences, we can see Venus Williams on the training courts as she prepared for her debut at the Birmingham Open. The American legend provided a glimpse into her journey throughout the tournament, including training sessions with her coach Hugo Armando and her physio Isabel Brigido, who also shared their experiences working with 'Queen V'.
“My day-to.day is just to help Venus, guider her a little bit on and off the court, making sure that all that she has to do is just focus on her tennis,” said Armando.
“We all know how much she loves being out here and competing and beng at tournaments, and if she’s not healthy she can’t do that. So the number one goal for her is to stay healthy for a long period of time, so she is able to compite consistently,” he added.
The video shows snippets of the final moments of the match in which Williams defeated Camila Giorgi in the first round by 7-6(5), 4-6, 7-6(8), and captures the reactions of her team behind the scenes.
“You did amazing, what a fire, what a champion your are ‘V’,” Brigido said to Williams.
“I’m so excited and it’s great to do this with my team, the only person missing right now is my family and Serena,” claimed the 7-time Grand Slam champion few minuts after.
In the video, you can also see pieces of the match where Williams faced Jelena Ostapenko and suffered a defeat. However, she expressed happiness with the level of play she achieved in Birmingham:
“I can move, I can hit the ball, im serving better than ever.”
“I don’t think that anyone’s going to be super excited to play against me, because I’m playing well. What matters most is to win the last point, so that’s what I’m going to focused on,” Venus said.
