Stefanos
Tsitsipas expressed admiration for Paula Badosa and named her as his favorite
player.
As
Wimbledon is about to begin, he talked about his upcoming participation in the
tournament and also mentioned his girlfriend, Paula Badosa. The Spanish player
is uncertain about her participation in the English tournament and will wait
until the last minute to decide if she will play.
Tsitsipas
spoke about his relationship with Badosa and stated that he feels inspired when
he watches her play. The Greek player referred to the former world No. 2 as his
"favorite player":
“I admire
her a lot. She is my favorite player. She strikes me as a very interesting
personality. Not just because of how she looks, but also because of what she
has inside of her. When she plays, I see myself… she inspires me,” Tsitsipas
said.
Badosa has been absent from the WTA tour since her quarterfinal defeat
at the Rome Open against Jelena Ostapenko. An injury forced her to withdraw
from the French Open, and she was unable to play any grass-court preparation
tournaments, which means she will enter the tournament without competitive rhythm.
In the first round, she will face world No. 140 Alison Riske, whom she
has played against twice, both times on the grass courts of the Mallorca Open.
Riske won in 2018, while Badosa emerged victorious in 2019. If she wins, will face the winner of the match between Marta Kostyuk and the 8th seed Maria
Sakkari.
Her boyfriend Stefanos Tsitsipas is the fifth seed in the men's draw and
has a tough draw against 2020 US Open champion Dominic Thiem. Tha Austrian leads the
head-to-head record 5-4, although they have never played on grass. Tsitsipas
has had a difficult time on grass in recent weeks, with only one victory in three tournaments, against Gregoire Barrere, and three defeats: by Richard
Gasquet at Stuttgart, Nicolas Jarry at Halle Open, and Yannick Hanfmann at Birmingham.
