Coco Gauff
revealed that she tried to channel her inner Steffi Graf when a fan proposed to
her during her doubles match at the
WTA Finals.
The
19-year-old American tennis player made her second appearance at the WTA
Finals, competing in both singles and doubles. Gauff began her campaign with an
impressive victory over Ons Jabeur, winning 6-0, 6-1.
However, in
the doubles alongside Jessica Pegula, they couldn't overcome Gabriela Dabrowski
and Erin Routliffe, falling 7-6, 6-3. In 2022, Gauff struggled to secure wins
in any of her six singles and doubles matches.
During a
press conference, Gauff shared a lighthearted moment from her doubles match
when someone in the audience shouted a marriage proposal to her.
“It
happened in the doubles yesterday. Someone said ‘will you marry me?’ I think it
was Steffi Graf who said ‘How much money do you have?’ I almost wanted to
recreate that moment,” claimed Gauff.
“But if we
had lost, people would’ve said ‘they lost because she said that,’ so I decided
not to. But this was like the 2nd time that’s happened to me & I’ve been so
tempted to recreate that moment,” 2023 US Open champion added.
Gauff still
has two more singles and doubles matches to determine her fate in the
tournament. In her upcoming singles match, she will face the world No. 2, Iga
Swiatek, who defeated Vondrousova in the opening match.
They have
an 8-1 head-to-head record in favor of the Polish player, with four of those
matches taking place this year. Gauff's lone victory was in the semifinals of
the 2023 Cincinnati Open, a tournament she went on to win. If Gauff
manages to defeat Swiatek, she will have virtually secured her place in the
semifinals of the WTA Finals for the first time in her career.
In the case
of doubles, her upcoming opponents will be the Czechs Barbora Krejcikova and
Katerina Siniakova, who have won a total of 7 Grand Slam titles, with their
most recent victory coming at the 2023 Australian Open.
