In the second round of the Paris Masters 2023, qualifier Roman Safiullin scored a stunning victory over Spain's Carlos Alcaraz, ranked No. 2 in the world. The final score of the match was 6-3, 6-4, in what is already the biggest victory in Safiullin's career.
Safiullin, who is currently ranked World No. 45, showed an impressive performance on the court throughout the match. With his powerful and aggressive style of play, he was able to dominate his opponent.
Moreover, his consistent serving, as well as his ability to execute winning shots, helped him maintain his level throughout in order to achieve a clear victory against the two-time Grand Slam champion.

Alcaraz will struggle to end year as No. 1

Alcaraz reached the quarterfinals of the Paris Masters in 2022, meaning that in the 2023 edition of the tournament, he needed to defend those points to have more of a chance to achieve his goal of regaining World No. 1.
However, this defeat further complicates his task. With only one tournament left in the season, the ATP Finals in Turin, Carlos Alcaraz will have to depend on the performance of the current World No. 1, Novak Djokovic.
If Djokovic manages to advance far at the Paris Masters, which is a very real possibility, it will be impossible for Alcaraz to regain the No. 1 ranking before the end of the season.
Meanwhile, Safiullin will face Karen Khachanov in the next round of the ATP 1000 tournament.
