Alexander Zverev has been fined half a million euros for assaulting his ex-girlfriend Brenda Patea in Berlin in 2020.
The World No. 9 is currently competing at the 2023 Rolex Paris Masters, where he just won his first-round match against Marton Fucsovics.
Now, it has been revealed that he has been charged 450,000 euros by the Berlin district court Tiergarten for having physically injured his ex-partner and mother of his child in a dispute in May 2020. The court thus followed the request of the Berlin public prosecutor's office, which had asked for a fine of 90 daily sentences of 5,000 euros each.
The court writes that "The defendant is accused of physically abusing a woman and damaging her health as part of an argument in Berlin in May 2020."
Zverev denies accusation
Zverev denies the accusation and is appealing against the sentence. His criminal defense lawyers Prof. Dr. Alfred Dierlamm and Katharina Dierlamm called the procedure "scandalous", adding that "there can be no question of a fair, constitutional procedure. Mr. Zverev will take every possible action against this."
"Mr Zverev rejects the accusation made against him. The allegations made by the complainant alone on which the penalty order is based have already been confirmed by a forensic medical report from the recognized Berlin forensic doctor Prof. Dr. Tsokos, Charité Berlin, refuted," they continued.
Therefore, it is likely that there will be a trial and until a final conviction, Zverev is presumed innocent. The German player commented on the allegations himself in June.
"I completely reject the allegations. My lawyers are taking care of the matter. I won’t say anything more about it," he said at the time at the Hamburg Open.
This comes after the 26-year-old was accused of violence toward another ex-girlfriend Olga Sharipova. While she did not press charges, an investigation by the ATP found no evidence of domestic violence in that case.
