Naomi Osaka was electric on court today after taking down
Daria Kasatkina 6-1, 6-3 to reach the fourth round of
Wimbledon for the very
first time. A positive result to celebrate a jubilant day with her daughter, Shai,
who celebrated her third birthday yesterday. However, it was not all celebrations with Osaka
explaining how she got herself into some trouble yesterday.
The four-time Grand Slam champion had no trouble on No.1
Court in what could have been a really tricky match against a former top 10
player who is trying to find her feet once more in the sport after a tricky
spell.
A former quarter-finalist, Kasatkina knows how to perform at
Wimbledon but was simply unable to cope with the sheer power Osaka was
constantly delivering from the other side of the net. This saw her stumble to a
5-0 deficit before two games later Osaka clinically wrapped the first set up.
An early break spelt possible doom for the Aussie as Osaka
looked to blast further clear and get proceedings done and dusted as soon as
possible. Kasatkina mounted a fightback, jeering herself on as she broke the
serve to level at 3-3. It was all in vain with Osaka breaking instantly back as
she won the final three games of the match to break new ground in a Grand Slam
that she has not had much success at in the past.
Osaka lets loose on daughter's timeout
Following her brilliant win, Osaka was delighted to have got the job done and progress further into Wimbledon than she has ever done. “In my career, I’ve actually never won on this court," she said in her on-court interview afterwards. “So I’m really glad to have made a good memory here. Thank you guys for cheering us on. It was a really big honour for me to play.”
She is in line to take on either World No.1 Aryna Sabalenka for the fourth time this year or former Roland Garros champion Jelena Ostapenko.
Before she can think about this, she has more important things on her mind. Osaka's daughter turned three-years-old on Thursday and is in London watching her mum compete at Wimbledon. While it was a special day, that has not stopped her being a naughty girl in recent times as Osaka touched upon.
“I don’t think I should be telling you this, but she was kind of bad yesterday,” Osaka
stated. “We tried to take her to the park but then she needed to go to timeout, so we’re going to try to take her to the park again today.”
The crowd saw the funny side of this as she let loose on the birthday celebrations. “It was an awesome birthday. She blew out her candles. She made a wish — I hope her wish is to behave better. Today’s a new day for her.”
