As Halloween rapidly approaches, tennis players are also eager to get in the act, even if they are restricted with tournaments and prior commitments. However, through the years Jessica Pegula, Madison Keys, Jennifer Brady and Desirae Krawczyk have enjoyed some memorable moments around this scary holiday, with them sharing their past experiences on The Player's Box Podcast.
With the WTA Tour Finals swiftly creeping up on Pegula and Keys, there is not really much time for them to immerse themselves in the Halloween spirit, something that Pegula rarely gets to do these days due to her tennis career. "I’m actually not super into Halloween. I think it’s just because I’ve missed it for so many years, like we were talking about before. I haven’t really been able to celebrate it in a while," Pegula said.

Trick or treat

"Some neighbourhoods gave you the mini candies, and then you’d hear your friends got full-sized bars somewhere else, so you’d plan to go there next year," Keys said, reminiscing the times she went trick or treating. "That was always fun to do," Pegula replied. "Jenny and I went trick-or-treating together — literally almost 20 years ago — and someone was handing out dollar bills! Eventually, they were like, 'We remember you!' and we were like, 'No, that’s not us — costume change!'
They went on to debate the age limit for trick or treating, with Keys suggesting 16-years-old. "I think 16 sounds right — early freshman or sophomore year," Pegula said. "If you’re 17 or 18, you’re kind of taking away from the little kids."
It is not just knocking on other people's door's that makes trick or treating but handing out the candy to the eager kids. However, it does not always go to script. "One time in Orlando, I had a bucket of candy and told the little kids to take two. Then I had to go to the bathroom, so I left the tray outside. I heard a group of kids coming and checked my Ring camera — it was like a bunch of 16- or 17-year-olds. They emptied the whole thing. Took it all. I felt awful for the little ones."

Dressing-up

While being on Tour restricts the amount of fun you can enjoy at Halloween, Pegula still found some time to dress up and celebrate the occasion. "That was in Fort Worth, Texas, a couple of years ago — it was actually Halloween during the Finals. You never get time to dress up because we’re always on the road, but I ordered an inflatable koala costume from Amazon. I just wanted to have fun." Krawczyk also got in on the act, scaring six-time Grand Slam champion Iga Swiatek in the process. "Yeah, we walked around Dickies Arena and even scared Iga (Swiatek.) She was like, 'Who’s in the T-Rex?'”
Keys thought about celebrating last year but opted against it. "Last year in Saudi we asked if we should bring costumes, but we didn’t know if it was celebrated there. They were like, 'Yeah, you should have,' So we missed our chance."

Horror movies

While the four unanimously agreed that they all would prefer to not watch proper horror movies, Brady relieved a prior story with former professional tennis player Shelby Rogers.
"Shelby Rogers and I once watched Paranormal Activity while playing a Challenger in the U.S. — we were so freaked out walking back to the hotel across a dark field. Something crashed near a loading dock, and we just sprinted! I remember it was 4 a.m., and I whispered, 'Shelby, are you asleep?' and she was like, 'No. I’m so scared.'"
