Mirra Andreeva is already planning her next adventure after
Cincinnati Open, although this one will take her far away from the tennis court. The teenage Russian has enjoyed a particularly eventful few weeks, and after a memorable celebration at
Daria Kasatkina's wedding in Greece, she already has another destination in mind: King's Island, potentially alongside Turkish player
Zeynep Sonmez.
Andreeva's wedding trip produced one of the more unexpected stories of her post-Roland Garros period. The 19-year-old admitted she was dancing until 3 a.m. with the group at Kasatkina's wedding, meeting new people and enjoying a rare chance to switch off from tennis after an intense period.
Now, however, the fifth seed has returned to business in Cincinnati and is beginning to look like the player who lifted
her maiden Grand Slam trophy in Paris. After a difficult spell following Roland Garros, Andreeva has finally put together consecutive wins again, while also finding time to make plans for some fun once her tournament is over.
That could involve Sonmez, who has emerged as Andreeva's potential partner for a trip to King's Island. Andreeva has wanted to visit the famous amusement park since her first appearance in Cincinnati in 2024, but Conchita Martinez has already ruled herself out.
Andreeva turns to Sonmez after Conchita rejects King's Island plan
Andreeva made no secret of her desire to visit King's Island, explaining that she had been trying to convince Martinez to join her. Her coach, however, was not interested in the roller coasters.
“She said, ‘No chance, Mirra. No chance. My neck is going to hurt. My back is going to hurt,’” Andreeva said with a laugh.
Andreeva won her first Grand Slam title at 19-year-old in Roland Garros, after defeatin Maja Chwalinska in the final.
That forced the teenager to look elsewhere, and Sonmez could now be the answer. The two discussed the possibility while practicing in Cincinnati, with Andreeva saying they could go together once the tournament ends.
“If we go, you know, I text you, we go together. I said, okay, that sounds good. Sounds like a plan,” Andreeva said. “So I'm waiting for a text, Zeynep.”
It would be a new experience for both players. Andreeva and Sonmez have never met on the WTA Tour, with the 24-year-old Turkish player currently ranked No. 52 after reaching a career-high No. 48. Sonmez could therefore become an unlikely companion as Andreeva looks for some downtime before turning her attention fully toward New York.
Andreeva recalls dancing until 3 a.m. at Kasatkina's wedding
The King's Island plan comes after Andreeva already enjoyed one memorable detour away from tennis. Following her Roland Garros triumph, she attended Kasatkina's wedding in Greece, describing it as her first wedding and one of the most enjoyable experiences of her short career.
“I was super happy that I was invited because to see, you know, to experience one of the most important moments in her life,” Andreeva said.
The teenager quickly found herself among a group she knew well, meeting Kasatkina's family and other guests before the evening turned into a much longer celebration than expected.
“After that, everyone got so relaxed. And then, you know, I got to show my moves,” Andreeva said. “I hope it's not on any video anywhere, but we just had so much fun.”
The party continued until the early hours. “We were dancing until 3 a.m. We just, you know, talked a lot with girls. I got to meet a lot of new people. And I don't know, it was just amazing.”
Andreeva also admitted she may not remember every detail of the food. Asked about the wedding cake, she laughed before explaining: “I ate so much that evening. Like, crazy. I ate ice cream. I ate cake. Then I ate whatever.”
