Ashleigh Barty was sensational in her demolition of Victoria Azarenka 6-0 6-2 at the Western & Southern Open.
Barty was largely aided by Azarenka herself who put on a terrible performance never fiding any rhythm or anything else on the court. Barty was relieved that the match was an easy and quick one as she expressed a lack of comfort in Cincinnati citing unfamiliarity with courts as the reason.
Her comfort level is growing and it needs to if she wants to defeat a red-hot Krejcikova today. Asked about that match she said:
“Yeah, well, I think we’ll just see how that one plays out, whether it finishes up in this set or it splits. Either way, for
now, it’s not a concern of mine."
The match was not finished at the time of Barty's press conference but ultimately it was won by Krejcikova. Barty said the team will prepare as they always do:
“We will go and do our homework tonight like we always do and prepare as best that we can and try and adjust my game a little bit to what the opponent brings. Then we just go out there and try and execute.”
It's a solid plan and one that worked at Wimbledon where Barty was able to win the closely contested match. Things will be a bit different here as Krejcikova plays much better on hard courts.
Barty was also asked how she was dealing with rain delays and her answer was a simple one:
“Been playing tennis, the reason why I’m here. In between the rain delays, reading my book. That’s about it. Pretty simple life Team Barty lives.” So far it's been working well.
