35-year old American tennis player Varvara Lepchenko has been provisionally suspended by the ITF for violating the Anti-Dopping Programme.
The International Tennis Federation announced in a statement released on their site that American professional tennis player Varvara Lepchenko has been provisionally suspended under Article 7.12.1 of the Tennis Anti-Doping Programme. In the release, it is noted that Lepchenko provided a urine sample at the Budapest Grand Prix earlier this year.
The sample was sent to the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) in Montreal for analysis. The analysis showed metabolites of two non-specified substances that were prohibited under category 6 of the 2021 WADA prohibited list. The substances are categorized as stimulants. "On 9 August 2021, Ms Lepchenko was sent a pre-charge notice of an Anti-Doping Rule Violation under Article 2.1 of the Programme (presence of a Prohibited Substance in a Player’s Sample) and was Provisionally Suspended with effect from 19 August 2021. Ms Lepchenko had (and retains) the right to apply to the Chair of the Independent Tribunal convened to hear her case why the Provisional Suspension should not be imposed (or should be vacated), but has not exercised that right to date."
