Jil Teichmann scored the biggest win of her career on Thursday night, defeating four-time Grand Slam champion
Naomi Osaka to advance to the quarterfinals at the Western & Southern Open.
The 24-year old received a wild card entry to the event, but played like a seasoned veteran as she pulled off the 3-6 6-3 6-3 upset. Although Osaka claimed the first set with ease, Teichmann fought back, frustrating the World No.2 with her depth and shot-placement.
Although neither lady was particularly impressive on serve, it was Teichmann who kept her groundstroke errors to a minimum. Furthermore, the Switzerland native showed no fear in going toe-to-toe with Osaka, outhitting the second seed from the baseline and finishing points with surprising ease at the net.
An increasingly frustrated Osaka could not capitalize on her opportunities, spraying errant shots when she had an open court. After Teichmann obtained the crucial break to go up 5-3, she finally converted her second match point to book her spot in the quarterfinals.
