Former world number one
Chris Evert has heaped praise on
young American tennis star Coco Gauff after her recent triumph.
The 19-year-old defeated Czech Republic’s Karolina Muchova
in straight sets in the final with a score of 6-3, 6-4 on Sunday to win the
Cincinnati Open (Western & Southern Open).
Evert, who won 18 Grand Slam titles in her illustrious
career, while responding to a tweet, congratulated Gauff on her success and
urged her to keep going.
It was indeed a special victory for the Atlanta-born who
also defeated the world number one
Iga Swiatek in the semifinal with a score of
7-6, 3-6, 6-4.
It was the fifth title at the highest level for the Gauff and she will be hoping to use this victory in order to bring her
A-game in the upcoming US Open.
The fourth and the final Grand Slam of the year will begin
in less than 10 day’s time where players from all over the world will showcase
their talent and fight for the ultimate glory.
Gauff’s record at the
US Open is not a great one where her best outing to date was last year where
she was defeated in the quarterfinal by France’s Caroline Garcia in straight
sets with a score of 6-3, 6-4.
