Austria’s tennis star
Dominic Thiem has been ruled out of
the 2023 Winston-Salem Open.
The decision comes just hours before the 29-year-old was set
to play his first-round match of the competition.
The development will be a huge setback for Thiem in his preparation
for the upcoming US Open.
The fourth and final Grand Slam of the year is set to begin
in less than 10 days’ time where players from all over the world will showcase their
talent and fight for the ultimate glory.
Sky Sports Austria reported that Thiem withdrew from the competition because of a 'gastrointestinal' infection.
Previously, he also withdrew from the two Masters events in
North America. The reasons for those withdrawals remain unknown.
The development means that the former world number three
will enter the upcoming mega-event with hardly any preparation at the Hard Court.
Thiem has an impressive record while playing at the US Open
where he won the title, which remains his only Grand Slam, back in 2020 when he
defeated Germany’s Alexander Zverev in the final in a five-set thriller with a
score of 2–6, 4–6, 6–4, 6–3, 7–6(8–6).
However, since then, the Wiener Neustadt has not played in
the quarterfinal or beyond in any of the Grand Slams. This year, he has been
knocked out of every Grand Slam from the first round.
