The incident at the WTA Finals involving Jessica Pegula and Mirra Andreeva is one that has been discussed by the whole tennis world. The drama that has led from this has seen numerous apologies been completed, including from the president of the WTA tennis association, Valerie Camillo, who directed this at Pegula.
This whole debacle commenced after a practice session involving both Pegula and Andreeva seemed to go sour. After Andreeva left the arena, Pegula's rant was picked up by the audio on the side of the court.
She was unaware of this and blissfully thought that her voice was only going to be heard by her and her coach, Mark Knowles. They were wrong. “Conchita has always been very nice to me but I’ve lost a little respect for her because I think, like this girl," Pegula would say. "I think she’s a nice girl but she’s a diva, she needs to be humbled. She needs to be, like, put in her place. It’s like Conchita doesn’t know how to do it. Just stand up to her," Pegula was heard saying.
“If I was a coach and my girl played four great games. You’re up 4-0, and you’re mad at me and hitting balls at me. I would feel like, first of all, that’s disrespectful to the other person - you’re up 4-0, shut the f--- up. I feel like Conchita pokes her and eggs on her behaviour."
This is not the only time the audio has picked up some interesting comments. World No.1 Elena Rybakina was overheard saying some stern words towards her coach, Stefano Vukov, before a practice session against Linda Noskova. However, all the focus is on what occurred between Pegula and Andreeva.

Lack of information to players reason behind blunder

The WTA released an apology confirming that they had failed to inform the players about the microphones picking up everything that they were saying on the court. The practice sessions were being live streamed for the public, and they soon spread pretty quickly on social media.
Camillo released a statement personally apologising to Pegula for the chaos that this has caused, praising the American No.2 in the process.
"There was a lack of advanced notice and clear signage to assist players about the recording equipment operating in the area," Camillo said. "It was also not our intention to capture conversations on the livestream of practices, but rather to record ambient sound. So clearly there was a failure in our technical execution and monitoring.
"What happened was regrettable and unacceptable. Jess is one of the WTA's best advocates and biggest stars. She does not deserve this distraction."
Speaking to ESPN, Pegula addressed her statements while stressing the importance for players to have more privacy. This is not the only time this has been exposed on the WTA Tour in 2026, most notably Coco Gauff's racket smashing in Melbourne.
"I know it is great for the fans, but I think that over the past year, and actually over the past few years, we have already seen a few incidents where it just seemed completely unnecessary."
The WTA Finals commence this Sunday. Reigning champion Rybakina gets her campaign up and running against Noskova while Pegula faces off versus fellow countrywoman Gauff. Aryna Sabalenka and Karolina Muchova commence proceedings on day two with Andreeva debuting against Svitolina.
