Fans on social media heaped praise on the world number
two
Leylah Fernandez after she guided Canada to the
Billie Jean King Cup final.
The 21-year-old was the driving force behind the team’s
success in the competition as they managed to get the better of 11-time winners
the Czech Republic to book their spot in the final of the competition.
Fernandez first defeated the reining Wimbledon champion Marketa
Vondrousova with a score of 6-2, 2-6, 6-3. She later appeared in the doubles
category alongside Gabriela Dabrowski as the two defeated Krejcikova and
Katerina Siniakova with a score of 7-5, 7-6.
Fans on the social media platform X — previously known as
Twitter — were full of praise for the Montreal-born for her heroics in the
competition.
The results would’ve been a great boost for Fernandez who
had a rather disappointing outing in the singles category in the major events. She participated in the main round of all Grand Slams but
could not qualify for the third round or beyond in any of the competitions.
However, in the doubles category, Fernandez had a decent run
as she played in the final of the French Open alongside America’s Taylor
Townsend. However, they ended up losing to Taiwan’s Hsieh Su-wei and China’s Wang
Xinyu with a score of 1–6, 7–6(7–5), 6–1.
