Australia’s
Nick Kyrgios has had words of support for
America’s
Amanda Anisimova after suffering a thrashing defeat in the final of
Wimbledon 2025. The 23-year-old was at the receiving end during the final of
the third Grand Slam of the year against Poland’s Iga Swiatek, who came out on
top with a score of 6-0, 6-0.
After becoming the first player in more than 100 years to
lose a Wimbledon final without winning a single game, Anisimova broke down in tears
during the presentation and couldn’t get hold of her emotions for a long time. Australia’s
Kyrgios appeared in the TNT Sports show Wimbledon Watchalong, where he had some
words of support for Anisimova. Kyrgios believes that every player goes through a match like this and thinks Anisimova will bounce back stronger.
"I think we’ve all been in that position before
where we felt extremely uncomfortable on the court, where everything has gone
wrong, you’ve done everything in your power to prepare but nothing hits the
mark,” said Kyrgios. "I feel that’s why we have a bit of
love for Amanda. We don’t want to take away the fact that she still made a
Wimbledon final. Who cares? That match was yesterday and she’s going to have so
much improvement for next time, so it doesn’t really matter."
Talking after the match, Anisimova admitted that while
the defeat was hurtful, she would look to focus on what she learnt during the competition, where she defeated the world number one Aryna Sabalenka in the semifinal. “I
feel like the last two weeks I’ve learned that you’re never going to be perfect,”
she said. “Every match is different. I reminded myself that nobody’s perfect. I
was trying to go into today thinking that, ‘ok, I’ll accept the mistakes I’ll
make.’ Maybe that wasn’t the right way of going into it (smiling). But I think
my fighting spirit got me to the final. It wasn’t me playing perfect in a way.
There were matches I struggled.”
