The 2025 edition of the
Billie Jean King Cup finals will
begin on Tuesday, where eight teams will battle to secure the ultimate prize.
Italy is defending its title and will be going up against China. The
other six teams are Spain, Ukraine, USA, Kazakhstan, Great Britain and Japan.
A lot of big-name players have decided
not to take part in the competition for various reasons, but despite that, some big-name players will still represent their country on the court. We are introducing you to five players who will be aiming to produce their best tennis and bring glory to
their respective countries.
The highest-seeded player to feature in the upcoming final
round of the Billie Jean King Cup will be America’s Jessica Pegula. The 31-year-old is coming into the competition on the back of an impressive run at the US Open this year, where she was eventually knocked out after losing to defending champion and world number one Aryna Sabalenka. Overall, Pegula has
featured in 59 matches in 2025, where he won 42 and suffered 17 defeats. With
Team USA facing what is probably the toughest opponent among the other seven, Kazakhstan, and with key players such as Coco Gauff and Madison Keys missing, the onus will be on Pegula to lead the team and help the side get over the line.
World number eight Jasmine Paolini will be representing
the defending champion Italy in the upcoming final round of the competition. The 29-year-old did not have a good time in her last appearance, which was at the US Open, where she was knocked out after losing to Marketa Vondrousova in straight sets with a score of 7-6, 6-1. Overall, Paolini has featured in 50
matches in different competitions this year, where she has won 35 and suffered
defeats on 15 occasions.
Pride at stake
World number 10 Elena Rybakina will be representing
Kazakhstan in the competition. The 26-year-old has seen a surge in her form in
the recent past, where she made some deep runs in different competitions.
Rybakina’s most recent appearance was also at the US Open, where she was
eventually knocked out after losing to Vondrousova in the fourth round with a score
of 6-4, 5-7, 6-2. Overall, Rybakina has featured in 61 matches in the singles this
year and has won 44 of them. Her best outing was winning the title in Strasbourg, where she defeated Liudmila Samsonova in the final. Kazakhstan will face the USA in the quarterfinals, and they will need their best player to be on top of her game.
Elina Svitolina
World number 13 Elina Svitolina will be representing Ukraine. The 31-year-old is having a mixed season, and lately, she has struggled to achieve positive results consistently. Svitolina’s most recent appearance was at
the US Open, where she suffered a shocking exit from the first round after
losing to Anna Bondar in straight sets with a score of 6-2, 6-4. Ukraine are
facing Spain in the quarterfinals. It will be the second time these two teams have faced each other in the competition. The only other instance when these two teams
faced off was back in 2013 when Spain came out on top with a score of 3-1.
Katie Boulter
Katie Boulter will be the second-highest-seeded player in Great Britain’s contingent for the upcoming Billie Jean King Cup quarterfinals. In the absence of Emma Raducanu, who would have been the top-seeded
player in the team, Boulter will have more responsibility to get her team over
the line in a tough contest. The side will face Japan. It will be the fourth time these two teams have faced off in the competition. On the previous three
occasions, Great Britain had a slight edge with two wins and one defeat. However, interestingly, this will be the first time these two have faced off in the last seven years.
