Former world number one
Caroline Wozniacki is set to return
to the court after a long break and can face a feisty opponent in the National
Bank Open.
The 33-year-old has not played professional tennis for a
while after announcing retirement back in 2020.
Wozniacki is set to face the current Wimbledon champion
Czech Republic’s Marketa Vondrousova in the second round of the competition.
Vondrousova, who lifted her maiden Grand Slam title after
beating Tunisia’s Ons Jabeur in the final with a score of 6-4, 6-4, will face Mayar
Sherif of Egypt in the opening round of the competition.
Wozniacki has an impressive record at the highest level
where she ended up lifting one Grand Slam in her career which was back in 2018
when she defeated the former world number one Romania’s Simona Halep in the final
with a score of 7–6(7–2), 3–6, 6–4.
Other than that, the Denish tennis star also played in the final
of the US Open twice where she was defeated on both occasions—first by Kim
Clijsters in 2009 with a score of 7-5, 6-3 and then by Serena Williams with a
score of 6-3, 6-3.
