Coco Gauff has revealed her first impressions of working with Brad Gilbert, who famously coached Andre Agassi and Andy Roddick.
At just 19 years old, Gauff has already made a name for herself in tennis, having reached world No. 1 in doubles and winning her first
WTA title at just 15 years old in 2019.
The American has had a fairly strong season, advancing to the fourth round of the Australian Open and winning the doubles titles at the 2023 Qatar Total Open and the 2023 Miami Open with partner
Jessica Pegula. However, she faced disappointment this season at Wimbledon after being defeated in the first round by qualifier Sofia Kenin.
Gauff teams up with Gilbert
The 2022 French Open finalist has been making some developments to her team and recently added well-known coach Gilbert. The 61-year-old is known for helping Agassi to six of his eight Grand Slam titles, and has also worked with the likes of Roddick, Andy Murray and Kei Nishikori.
Speaking about the new partnership to Tennis Now, Gauff said:
"Working with him has been great. I really didn't know him that well other than the commentating, just a little bit seeing his past coaching performances, but those were before I was born."
Gilbert says Gauff has a lot of talent
Meanwhile, Gilbert praised Gauff back in March while talking on the Craig Shapiro Podcast:
"She has a world of talent and a great opportunity in the next 2-3 years to become the next great American player," he said.
However, he underlined that in order to do so, Gauff would need to continue putting the work in:
"there's no given that it's just going to happen," he added.
Gauff is currently competing at the
DC Open in Washington, where she is seeded third and has been progressing well. She will face eighth seed Liudmila Samsonova in her next match.
