Taylor Fritz overcame a tough match against Andy Murray and is in the semifinals of the DC Open.
The American entered Washington as the first seed and advanced easily to the round of 16. After receiving a bye in the first round, he defeated Zachary Svajda, a 20-year-old American who came through the qualifying rounds.
As for Murray, the 15th seed also skipped the first round and faced a tough match against 21-year-old Brandon Nakashima, winning 7-6(5), 6-4.
Murray and Fritz had only played one match against each other before, where the American dominated the former world No. 1 with a score of 6-1, 6-3 at the Canadian Open.
In their second encounter, Fritz secured a break in the first game, which he held on to without major difficulties during the first part of the set. In the ninth game, with Fritz leading 5-3 and Murray serving, the American failed to convert his first set point of the match.
In the following game, he had the opportunity to close the set with his serve, but again wasted two set points and ended up conceding to the British player, who extended the match to a tie-break and showed his expertise to take a 7-6(2) lead.
Fritz bounced back in the second set, achieving another early break that allowed him to lead 3-0. Although he faced break points against him in the fifth game, Fritz held his service during the set to level the match with a 6-3 score.
The third set was a constant battle for Murray to get a break, while Fritz tried to defend his service. Fritz saved 7 set points in the set and capitalized on one of the two opportunities that Murray gave him to secure the victory.
Murray had three break points in his favor that Fritz saved, and it was only on the third match point that he finally confirmed a hard-fought victory. In the quarterfinals, he will face world No. 71 Jordan Thompson, who defeated Cristopher Eubanks in the second round.
