Serena Williams and Sofia Kenin both successfully completed their first matches in the Fed Cup tie against Latvia to give team USA 2-0 lead.

The US Fed Cup team is filled with a lot of star names. According to WTA Ranking, Kenin is no. 1 of the American team, followed by Serena Williams. Alison Riske and Coco Gauff are no's. 3 and 4 and Bethanie Mattek-Sands is a no.5 as a doubles specialist. A very strong team of the USA is playing against Latvia in Angel of the Winds Arena in Everett.
2020 Australian Open champion, Sofia Kenin opened the play on day 1 of the Fed Cup qualifiers. The young American faced Anastasija Sevastova. Former world number 11 aimed to stun the young unexperienced player but the opposite was true.
Kenin did not experience any major difficulties throughout the match. She kept a high level of the first service when she managed to win 79% of the points after her first serve. She also hit 26 winners and only 19 unforced errors what led her to a comfortable 6-2, 6-2 victory.
Despite the recent success of her younger colleague, Serena Williams was again the star of the night. Playing her first match since 2018, Serena faced Jelena Ostapenko. The last time they met in 2017 in Abu Dhabi and Ostapenko defeated Williams 2-1. That was their only match and so the American was looking to level the H2H score in front of the home crowd.
Both players showed a great fighting spirit during the match. 23-times Grand Slam champion struggled on her service a bit when she managed to get in only 48% of her first service. However, she kept her cool in both tie-breaks to defeated the Latvian 7-6, 7-6. After the first day in Everett, USA leads 2-0 over Latvia.
